Remember how I was very optimistically telling you about the fresh start Emily and me were going to have? Well, it turns out it was indeed that: very optimistic. So, we will once again start over. And this time we’ll do it properly!
It has been quite a tough few months for Emily and me. Okay, I have to be honest, most things go really, really well. We have a much better bond than before and enjoy spending time together. Only the riding part is not going so smooth.
It turns out that through the accident, in some way or other, Emily has gotten scared of me riding her. Just walking is fine, but as soon as I urge her into a trot, she gets very frightened. And after a few outbursts, it started to get to me too. Which meant that I would tense up as soon as she would make a strange move, which in turn confirmed her in believing there was something scary, and… well, you see the vicious circle there.
So we are getting in some professional help. A talented, young horse trainer is going to teach us how to properly communicate and help us find our trust again. The way she works with her horses is just amazing. I have seen them react to the smallest signs she gives them. And all that based on a very solid base of trust and safety. If anyone can help us, it will be her.
In the first stages of training, we will only be working on the ground. Later on, the trainer will start riding Emily, and if that goes well, I get to ride again too. I’m really excited to see how it all goes and hope that we can bring the old Emily back. But because she is such an amazing, easy-going horse to be with, I’m sure we can make that happen. Or, well, ‘we’ being the trainer, mostly. With me being more of a participant and student in the process.
Either way, I have full confidence in her. And I’m really looking forward to our training sessions. I’ll keep you posted about our progress!
