I’m so happy apple season has started again. Of course, apples are usually available throughout the year, but in autumn, with the new harvest, that is the best. Fresh apples, other varieties, general apple abundance, I love it!
The biggest joy of the new apple season for me, is that my favourite variety is available again. I’m a huge fan of the “Santana” apples. Unfortunately, they have a rather short harvest season and are only available in that time. So when earlier today I saw them for the first time this year, I literally gave a tiny squeak of delight. I think no-one noticed. Except maybe the toddler that stood right next to me. But he only smiled at me, so that’s alright.
Anyway, those are my absolute favourite apples. They are firm, very tasty, but not too sweet. And now that I googled them, I found out they can sometimes be eaten by people with a mild apple allergy. That’s quite interesting, actually!
But let’s not go into that, that would become way too molecular for the easy food post I had planned. Instead let’s talk about some nice apple-based snacks. They are healthy, delicious and very autumn-y. Click on the images to find out the recipes.
Apple and Peanut Butter Slices
This first snack will seem a bit strange to some of you. I know. I have experienced enough strange looks while preparing my apple and pb slices in various settings. But honestly, they are delicious! I was sceptical at first too, but now this has become one of my favourite snacks.
You can choose to just spread some peanut butter on apple slices, which is the easiest and quickest option. If you would like to make it a bit more fancy, mix some peanut butter with a drizzle of honey (or maple syrup) and some spices first, and spread that on the apple slices. That really is a taste of heaven!
Yoghurt with Apple and Spices
Does this need explaining? Apple, yoghurt, spices, all of them are delicious, and even more so when combined. For a more filling snack, or a breakfast or lunch, you can add some oats or granola. And maybe some raisins or dried cranberries. Or some nuts. Basically, add in anything autumnal that you want.
And do you remember my recipe for yoghurt with warm apples and hazelnut granola?
Making oatmeal with apples is really just a healthy apple pie for breakfast. You can choose to make a simple oatmeal with only apples and spices or add, well, any of the toppings mentioned above. A great favourite of mine is oatmeal with apple, honey and peanut butter. And let’s not forget about the delicious oatmeal with apple, maple and pecan!
When I was younger, I used to eat this quite a lot. Often as a side dish to a meal. But it is a great snack too. Just grate an apple and half a carrot, mix with some lemon juice, and voila!
Apple and Berry Compote
It’s not so long ago I wrote about this one. Back then it was full-on summer and I ate the compote cold combined with yoghurt. Now in autumn, I think it would be perfect served warm, maybe even with a bit of ice cream…
You didn’t think I would forget to include apple crumble, right? I wouldn’t dare! Made into a delicious healthy breakfast, or heavenly warming snack, a bowl of apple crumble is the perfect companion to cuddle up on the couch with. In fact, I think I’m going to make a batch right now!
With so many delicious options it’s a good thing we have the whole of autumn to enjoy fresh apples. Hmm, things like this is what makes me love autumn so much.
