Cowl in the making

I feel a bit guilty… Last February, my mom gave me this beautiful, dark red knitting yarn (Malabrigo cereza), and I immediately started on a cowl. But then it kind of halted, which is silly because once I’m knitting I always immediately remember how nice and relaxing that is. Anyway, now I’m going to finish it. And I will do so before the fifth of December!

We got the yarn at the huge, yearly craft event of the Netherlands. My mom is a very skilled, devoted knitter and she visits the event every year. This time I joined her and we had a great day out. She treated me to this beautiful yarn, so that I could make a lovely little shawl or cowl for myself. (I’m sorry for neglecting the project, mom. I’m going to finish it now, though, promise!) The yarn is a lovely dark red named Cereza, from the brand Malabrigo. It’s 100% pure Merino wool and feels so soft, you just want keep cuddling it!

I like that the yarn is produced at a company that puts effort into being sustainable. They try to minimize their environmental footprint by, for example, using as few chemicals as possible and applying solar warmth to heat the water needed for production processes. They also try to create job opportunities for people who have difficulties finding work. Those things just make the wool feel even better, you know?

Anyway, I’m working on the cowl again now. It’s going to be a round structure with a small pattern in it. As the look of the cowl is quite simple (although the pattern is a bit more complicated), the subtle colour differences in the yarn will come out beautifully.

As for finishing the project, I think setting a deadline will help me finally finish it. I’m not usually one who needs motivation to do these kinds of things, but with this difficult pattern it is not really the activity that comes to mind first after a busy day and it definitely isn’t suitable for relaxed knitting during a train journey. Anyway, I can do it. And I will, before the fifth of December. That is the date of the Dutch holiday of “Sinterklaas” and although I’m definitely keeping this precious gift for myself, it is just the right colour to fit the celebrations. (And maybe I will wrap it up as a gift to myself, who knows?)

I’ll be sure to show my lovely cowl as soon as it is finished. Now that I have told all of you, I will have to make sure it do it on time.

Are you going to do anything creative this weekend?
