Cranberry Pear Compote

Last Saturday, I wrote that you can find berries almost everywhere right now. But they are not even restricted to nature, some are even widely available in stores right now, like the cranberry. I think this little delicious thing deserves some proper attention, and a mouth-watering recipe to go with it!

A Proper Health Boost

Isn’t it amazing how much good stuff can fit in such a small berry? Although I am not a big fan of the term “superfoods”, I think you could definitely regard the cranberry as one of them. Packed with vitamin C and A, as well as loads of fibre, this little thing will give a boost to your immune system. And they are delicious too!

Somehow, cranberries have become rather involved in holiday traditions. Some say that has something to do with their origin and the native cultures using them. But I think their gorgeous red colour has also played a major part. Plus the convenient fact that they are at their peak moment, just at the time when the holiday festivities begin. Either way, they are perfect for Christmas cookies, sauces, drinks, and more. So why not let the festive feeling begin by cooking up some of this delicious cranberry pear compote?

Cranberry Pear Compote

What you need:

  • 150 grams of cranberries
  • A small pear
  • Two small dates (or one large)
  • A tablespoon of rice syrup
  • Half a teaspoon of apple pie spices

How to:

  1. Rinse the cranberries
  2. Chop the pear in medium sized cubes and the dates in small pieces.
  3. Put the cranberries, pear and dates in a saucepan, together with half a cup of water. Bring to a boil.
  4. When boiling, turn down the heat to keep a gentle simmer. Add the spices.
  5. Leave to simmer for about twenty minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. After twenty minutes, check if all berries are cooked. If you can still see some though skins, keep on the fire for another five minutes.
  7. When all is soft, add the rice syrup. I used a relatively small amount, so if you want your compote to be a bit sweeter, add more to taste.
  8. Stir one last time, and ready is your compote!
  9. You can either eat it immediately or leave to cool and store.

Note: This compote is also a delicious topping for your oatmeal!
