Lately, I have been addicted to frozen yoghurt. It is the perfect cooling snack! With only wholesome, healthy ingredients, your body will love you for it. Plus, it is really easy to prepare and just very yummy!
I have written about frozen yoghurt before, almost a year ago. Then I kind of forgot about it for a while, but lately I have rediscovered the joys of this healthy ice cream alternative. Which has gotten me to experiment with all kinds of new flavour combinations as well.
Frozen yoghurt basically is just that, yoghurt put in the freezer to become solid. You will have to add at least a sweetener, though, for that keeps the yoghurt from crystallizing. Apart from that, there are so many great options possible! Here is my basic recipe for fro-yo and a few of my favourite frozen yoghurt variations.
Basic Frozen Yoghurt (serves one)
- 50 to 75 ml of yoghurt (or as much as your little tray can hold, just increase the amounts of the other ingredients as well)
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- a pinch of salt
- 1. In a small freezer-friendly box or tray, mix everything together, make sure it is stirred well!
- Leave to freeze for about two to three hours (depending on the freezing temperature).
- Enjoy immediately!
That is very, very basic, right? Nothing to it. But, I have to admit, a bit boring as well. So let’s add in some other flavours!
Apple and nut butter
Replace the honey with 1.5 tablespoon of pure apple syrup (“diksap” in Dutch) and after mixing, add a nice swirl of nut butter. I like to use non-sweetened peanut butter, but I could imagine almond butter or even hazelnut would work great as well.
Maple, cinnamon and cookies
A bit less healthy, maybe, but adding cookie crumbs really transforms the snack into a sweet treat. The crumbs will get soggy, of course, but if you like cookie dough, then you can’t go wrong with this one!
Use 1 to 1.5 tablespoon of maple syrup instead of honey, add a dash of cinnamon and when all is mixed, carefully stir a handful of (medium-sized) cookie crumbs into the yoghurt.
Of course yoghurt and fruits are a match made in heaven. And exactly the same goes for frozen yoghurt. Use any sweetener you want (I still prefer apple syrup or honey) and go crazy with fruity spreads. You can choose to mix them through completely, or leave some bigger clumps in the yoghurt. It’s up to you!
Note: I would recommend using a spread that is made only of fruit, no added sugar, as I feel that gives the nicest, most refreshing taste. But again, that is up to you and what you are used to.
The great thing about recipes as simple as this is that you can very easily adapt it to your own preferences. I know that I sometimes tend to have a slightly odd taste when it comes to sweetness (as a result of not eating any refined sugar), and I try to adapt my recipes to normal taste as much as possible. But if you do feel it is not sweet enough, or you would like to try another sweetener or add-in, please go ahead! In fact, I would love to hear your ideas and experiences.
If you taste the yoghurt before freezing, it should be slightly too sweet. That will be tempered once it is frozen, so take that into account.
