Do you know those moments when you just crave a healthy and filling snack? You don’t want an entire meal, but your body does ask for some nutrients. If a craving like that happens at a moment when you’re short on time, or are not in the mood for elaborate cooking, then granola is the way to go!
A Love for Granola
I just love granola. When I was younger, I ate a lot of factory produced cereals, mostly sugary clumps of grains. But then I started eating more healthy and those cereals disappeared from my menu. Until I rediscovered the joys of real granola. Home-made and healthy this time. Now I not only eat granola in yoghurt, but actually prefer to eat it separate, as a tasty snack.
One of the reasons why granola is so perfect, is because it is easy to make and does not require a lot of time. In only five to ten minutes, you will have a delicious bowl of crunchy grains. Because it is so quick to make, I usually only make a small, single-serving batch. That way the granola is still fresh and crisp and a bit warm when you eat it. But of course, you can also make a bigger batch and store that. In an airtight glass jar, it will theoretically keep for at least a couple of weeks. But in reality, you will have munched it all away by then, trust me!
Another thing I really like about granola, is how much variety you can add. It is all up to you, really! You can choose what kind of spices to add, what sweetener to use, what optional extras you will add. You can even experiment with different types of grain. My all-time favourite is a granola with cinnamon and maple syrup, but below I have listed some other tasty combinations as well.
What you will need:
- An amount of rolled grains (depending on how hungry you are, I usually go for one or two handfuls)
- A liquid sweetener (you will need about one tablespoon per 30 grams of oats)
- Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Add oats and let roast for a few minutes. Keep stirring frequently! If you are adding any spices or other add-ins, do so now.
- When the oats are starting to become fragrant and get just a little bit brown, add your sweetener. It will immediately start to sizzle and bubble, don’t get scared, just start stirring like your life depends on it.
- As soon as you have added the sweetener, it will all go very fast, so pay attention as to not let your granola get burned. When all the grain is covered in sweetener, toss it around the pan for just a couple of seconds more. Then as the whole starts to become a brown colour, spread the granola on a cutting board to cool down.
- At first the granola will be soft, but as the clusters cool down, they will become crunchy.
- After about five minutes, the granola will be good to eat. You can crumble it up a bit with your fingers and start munching!
Tasty Combinations (all using rolled oats as a basis)
- Maple syrup + cinnamon
- Honey + apple pie spices
- Honey + peanut butter + cinnamon
- Rice Syrup + ginger + grounds cloves
- Chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecan nuts etc)
- Raw cocoa nibs
- Buckwheat groats
- Grated coconut
