It’s time for another overview of seasonal produce. And this month, it really starts getting fun. With the arrival of May, we can finally look out for lots of fresh veggies and the first sweet fruits. Yum!
New this month are some bright green coloured veggies. They are perfect to give your meals a fresh look. And they are delicious, of course. Try slicing some celery or fennel into a spring soup, cook some asparagus to serve with ham and potatoes or make a curry with pointed cabbage. And if you really want a green meal, why not make a mouth-watering soup of fresh garden peas?
But that is not all that is new this month. Because, drumroll please, we can now start eating the first locally grown tomatoes again! Whooh! Ok, maybe I am a bit too happy about that. But I just like tomatoes so much, don’t you?
Looking at all the veggies that already were in season, there is lots to choose from as well. We still have some hearty veggies like potatoes, endive, cauliflower, beans and carrots. Use those to fill up your meals, particularly on those days when it is still a bit cold outside.
On warmer days, you might look for some lighter dishes. In case you decide to make a salad, there are enough seasonal options as well. Apart from the tomatoes I already mentioned, try sprouts, radish, lettuce, spinach or water cress.
As for the fruits, there is more very happy news. Strawberries are in season again! That means you can eat as much of those amazing, delicious, healthy, shining berries as you want. Maybe you are even growing them in your own garden. But any way, they are delicious, so enjoy them when you can!
And of course apples are always in season, so don’t forget about them either.
