With autumn being now well under way, lots of people start getting sore throats and feeling feverish. To prevent that, or to recover from it, try this delicious and warming fruit drink. Spicy, yet soothing, and it will give your body the boost it needs!
When preparing this drink, your whole kitchen will start to smell lovely. It always makes me happy and reminds me of Christmas and snow and cold days, but in a good way! To be honest, I can’t wait till it’s really getting cold outside!
To add to the winter feeling, I had some typical winter snacks to go along with it. As you can see, that meant eating a mandarin and two slices of this whole wheat olive oil, sea salt & cocoa bread, topped with some home made apple compote a good friend of mine gave me. Just delicious!
Spiced Berry Juice (makes 1 serving)
A mug of berry juice (see notes)
1 star anise
1 cardamom pod
A pinch of cinnamon (or half a cinnamon stick)
Juice of ½ lemon (optional)
Bring the juice to a light simmer in a small saucepan. Add all of the spices, cover the lid and leave to simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes, keep stirring every few minutes. Remove the cloves, star anise and cardamom pod from the juice. Then add lemon juice, stir well and serve.
1. Use your own fresh berry juice, or buy it at your grocer. In case you buy it, check whether it is really freshly pressed and doesn’t contain any sugar or other additives.
2. Keep on a very low simmer, otherwise it will boil down and you will be left with a berry shot instead of a large mug.
Please use this recipe as an starting point and try varying with different juices and spices.
Curl up on the sofa with this delicious drink and enjoy!
Are you looking forward to colder days?
