Sporty Summer, Part Two: Pilates

What sports can you do during summer? And maybe more importantly, what sports will be possible to do outside, so you can enjoy nature at the same time? I will be writing a series of posts on nice summery sports during the next few weeks. I hope they will inspire you!

For the second part of this series, I thought I should pay some attention to pilates, one of my own favourite sports. It is perfect for summer, as it is low-key and can be practised at a slow pace, preventing you from getting over-heated.

Basically, pilates is a combination of yoga and strength training. It focuses on your core, or energy centre, and works on stability, flexibility and strength. There are several different types of pilates, but they all start from dynamic moves that involve stretching and training your muscles. The great thing about pilates is that everyone can do it at their own pace. You can always adjust the poses so that they are possible for you, and just go a bit slower or do less repetitions if needed. And what every good pilates teacher will tell you, is to listen to your body. If something hurts, you should watch out with that exercise, or adjust your position. Never force yourself to do something that is too much. I like that approach!

Pilates classes are usually taught inside, but when doing it on your own, you can easily take it out of doors. The only thing you really need is a proper yoga mat. Roll up your mat, walk out into the garden, or even the park or a forest, and you’re ready to start. As pilates in itself will already make you feel relaxed, the combination with nature is just perfect. You will feel zen, peaceful and restored after such a workout, just wait and see!

If you have never practised pilates before, I would recommend you to start carefully. Preferably start with a few classes at a local gym, and if that is not possible, at least use high-quality videos to guide you. As you can harm your body just as easily as aid it, it is very important to perform the exercises in the right way. A video is a lot better to help with that than a book, for example.

To do pilates outside, practise a few times inside with a video next to it at first. Or just go out in the garden and take a laptop with you, of course.

I hope you will enjoy pilates just as much as I do. Have fun!
