If you are looking for an easy and healthy snack to take along on your hikes, trail mix is the way to go. Not only is it easy and light to carry with you, it’s also very nutritious. And, also quite important, it tastes delicious!
What is “trail mix”?
Basically, trail mix is a combination of nuts and dried fruits. So it’s very simple really. With that basic idea in mind, you can come up with all kinds of crazy combinations. You can buy ready-made mixes in your store, or get creative and start mixing your own. With a couple of different nuts at hand, you can already make numerous variations.
Why is it healthy?
The combination of sweet fruits and savoury nuts provides you with all the nutrients you need on a short hike. The nuts contain tons of healthy fats, antioxidants, minerals and vitamin B-complexes. Amazing how much goodness can fit in one type of food, isn’t it? To make it even better, the trail mix adds some more vitamins, fibres and sugars to give you the complete energy boost.
Why is it great on hikes?
Well, first of all, it gives a ton of energy after eating. Energy of the durable kind, so that you can keep on walking for another couple of hours. Energy-bars or sweet snacks will give you an energy boost as well, but will soon get you into a “sugar-slump”, while the energy from trail mix is more evenly spread out over a longer period of time.
And, also very nice, trail mix doesn’t spoil, is lightweight and solid. On a hike, fruits may spoil or get squeezed, cookies can crumble and bread might be smushed. A box or bag of trail mix can withstand almost anything. So, I would say, the perfect snack!
To get you inspired for making your own mixes, here are some ideas for tasty combinations:
- Macadamias, Para nuts, coconut slices and tropical fruits.
- Pecans, cranberries and raisins
- Walnuts, hazelnuts and raisins
- Or any other combination you think is great
So, think about taking some trail mix the next time your are packing for a hike!
