Is it safe to say summer is here yet? If you look at the explosion of new fruits and veggies this month, I would say, yes, it’s summer now. Anyway, let’s have a look at this months’ seasonal produce!
Yum, there is so much choice in seasonal greens right now! This start of summer always feels so plentiful. Well, it is. But it surprises me again every year. Suddenly there are so many delicious fruits and veggies to choose from. It’s almost too much. I mean, how is a person supposed to decide what to eat when you have so many options? Not that I’m complaining, of course!
There is a lot of greens new this month. Green beans, for example. They are perfect in a salad with some goats cheese and a honey balsamic dressing. Talking of salads, why not involve some cucumber or corn in one? They are ready to harvest now as well. Or maybe a nice casserole with leek or aubergine?
Also new in this month is the artichoke. I always feel this is a bit of a controversial veggie. Either you love it, or you think it is nonsense to eat this “flower”. Honestly, I’m not a big fan. But one of my flatmates is. To him it’s a delicious treat. It all depends on the person, I guess. It makes me wonder, how do you guys feel about artichoke?
Let’s not forget about the new fruits either! Prepare yourself, there are so many! One of my own favourites is the red currant. I just love how much taste those tiny berries contain. But there is also the black currant, which is slightly less tart. Both are perfect to use in cakes and other bakery as well. While you are at it, why not involve some apricots, raspberries, cherries or gooseberries in your bakings too? They are all in season now!
If you like asparagus, this month is your last chance to eat some. After that, you will have to wait till next spring to get some fresh, seasonal stalks. The same goes for rhubarb, so enjoy those while you still can! (Or freeze a big batch of rhubarb compote, that is always nice to have at hand!)
And then there are still all of the veggies that already were in season, and still are. Pick a salad from radish, lettuce, spinach, tomato and watercress. Or maybe you would like to go for a more hearty dish involving potato, endive, celery, cauliflower, sweet peas, turnips, beans or carrots? It is all up to you!
(Again, all those choices!)
Enjoy your cooking!
