We are part of the world, as the world is part of us

While the climate conference in Paris is taking place, we will have to wait nervously for the outcome. But we can do something by ourselves too.

Though I do think multinationals and governments will have to play a very large role in solving the climate crisis, we common people can make a change as well. In all our own daily lives, there are so many moments when you can do something for the environment. Even if it is only something very small, it is still worth it. All those small actions amount up to a much larger impact, and that is what we want.

Most of all, it is so very important to realise that we are part of the earth’s system. If you realise that, then suddenly all the small actions to help the climate will come naturally. If you remember we are animals like any other species, then it might not be so strange to want to preserve their living space as well. Only when we realise we are part of the whole ecosystem of this world, then we will be able to solve the climate crisis. Because that will be the moment we stop only looking out for ourselves, and start seeing the bigger picture. Only then will we realise what is needed for the world as we know it to keep existing.

I know it might be hard. I know it is a huge transition in the way we are thinking. But I also feel it is the only way. The answer to our problems is a bit of a paradox. Earth will survive, with our without our help. But we won’t, if we don’t start caring for the earth.

I was reminded of this once more when I saw this quote on a napkin at Bagels&Beans yesterday:

“…we know the sap
which courses through
the trees as we know
the blood that courses
through our veins.
We are part of
the earth and it
is part of us.
The perfumed flowers
are our sisters.
The bear, the deer,
the great eagle,
these are our brothers.
The rocky crests,
the dew in the meadow,
the body heat of the pony,
and man all belong to
the same family…”

– Chief Seattle

I think it is very important to never forget this lesson. It is already quite old, but then, so is the earth, and so is our bond with the world around us. We have just lost the track a bit over the past centuries. Now we have to find it back.

Always remember, we are just as much part of the earth’s system as any other living thing. Nothing more and nothing less.
